Car sales in Wigan

There are a number of car dealerships in Wigan that sell both new and used cars. Many of these dealerships are located near one another, making it easy for shoppers to compare prices and vehicles. In addition, many dealerships offer financing options, which can make purchasing a car more affordable.

The car industry in Wigan can be traced back to the early years of the 20th century, when a number of small engineering companies were established in the town. These firms were attracted by the availability of cheap labour and the proximity of the Liverpool docks, which allowed them to import raw materials and components from overseas. One of the first car companies to set up in Wigan was the Wigan Motor Company, which was founded in 1902. The company produced a range of small cars, including the Wigan Three, which was one of the first cars to be manufactured in the town. The Wigan Motor Company was taken over by the Rootes Group in 1932, and the car production was moved to the group's factory in Coventry. However, a number of the engineering staff remained in Wigan and set up their own companies, such as GKN and Lucas. In the 1960s, the British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC) set up a factory in Wigan to produce the Austin Maxi car. The factory employed around 4,000 people at its peak, but it was closed in 1981 as part of BLMC's restructuring programme. Today, there are no car factories in Wigan, but a number of engineering companies remain in the town.
