The first recorded instance of a car in Penarth occurred in 1895, when local doctor, William Price, took delivery of a Benz Velocipede. It is thought that he was the first person in Wales to own a car. The first car dealership in Penarth was established in 1900 by Percy Nash, who sold a range of cars including Wolseleys and Humber. Nash's business flourished and in 1903 he opened a second branch in Cardiff. The car industry in Penarth really began to take off in the early years of the 20th century. In 1903, a local garage owner, Charles Rolls, teamed up with Henry Royce to form the Rolls-Royce company. The first Rolls-Royce factory was built in Penarth in 1906. In 1908, another local garage owner, Herbert Austin, founded the Austin Motor Company. The first Austin factory was built in Longbridge, Birmingham, but in 1913 a second factory was built in Penarth. During the First World War, both the Rolls-Royce and Austin factories in Penarth were converted to produce aircraft engines. After the war, production at both factories resumed and the car industry in Penarth went from strength to strength. In the 1930s, the Austin factory in Penarth was the largest car factory in Wales, employing over 3,000 workers. The factory produced a range of popular cars including the Austin Seven, Austin Twelve and Austin Sixteen. During the Second World War, both the Rolls-Royce and Austin factories in Penarth once again switched to producing aircraft engines. After the war, car production resumed but the industry went into decline in the late 20th century. The Rolls-Royce factory in Penarth closed in 2005 and the Austin factory closed in 2007. There are no longer any car factories in Penarth, but the town remains an important centre for the car industry in Wales.
